PWA or Native App: Why IO Tech Installs Without Going Through the App Store

September 12, 2026 · 4 min read

When people hear "app," they almost always think App Store or Google Play: search for the name, tap Install, wait for the download. IO Tech doesn't work that way — and this isn't a minor technical detail. It directly shapes how a store installs the tool and uses it day to day.

What Is a PWA?

A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a website that behaves like an app once added to a phone's home screen: its own icon, full-screen with no address bar, camera access, and offline functionality after the first load. Technically, it's still a web page — but the experience feels exactly like a native app.

Why We Made This Choice for IO Tech

Three concrete reasons drove this choice over a traditional native iOS/Android app:

What This Means for the Optician, in Practice

In practice, installation takes three steps: open the link received by email, tap "Add to Home Screen" from the browser menu (Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android), then launch the icon like any other app. Once activated with the license key, the tool works offline — useful in a store basement or a fitting area with poor network coverage.

One Limitation to Know About A PWA doesn't have access to certain advanced hardware features reserved for native apps (for example, the TrueDepth sensor on some iPhones). IO Tech relies solely on the standard camera and the facial landmarks it detects — enough for measuring pupillary distance and centering height, but a difference worth keeping in mind if you're comparing it with a native tool.

No Store Install, No Account to Create

Open the link, add it to your home screen, activate your key — that's it.
